The Vegan Vs. Evolution (Why Humans Shouldn’t Eat Meat…Wait, What?)
Just had a discussion with a guy who is vegan and his rationale for why people shouldn’t eat meat was this…if you look at the way carnivorous animals were made (fangs, claws, night vision, etc) you’ll see we were designed very differently and thus we should consume only plant based foods….that’s it. That’s the whole argument.
OK, I’ll play…
The set of attributes you’re describing are those belonging to predatory animals. Ill circle back to that.
If you look at our teeth we actually do have fangs, they’re called incisors. Furthermore, we don’t need claws and things to the like because we were given this other thing, I just can’t remember what its, oh yeah, it’s called A HUGE FREAKING BRAIN. The human brain is massive in relation to the other animals on this planet. I say animals because, as much as some people will not care to admit, we are animals. Our basic functions are the same as the other inhabitants of our ecosystem… heart, lungs, and other vital organs. That makes us animals.
Back to the brain, our brains are large and capable of things like strategy which we, as PREDATORY ANIMALS, use to capture our prey…Trust me dude, no one in the world wants a set of bad ass Wolverine claws more than I do. Evolution decided, a bit hastily if you ask me, that we didn’t need them.
The truth is we were designed to consume both meat and vegetables. You can choose to do whatever you like for whatever reasons you like. But for some reason we have to vilify that which we don’t agree with, I don’t understand the desire of some people to lump everyone into one big homogenous mix… Different approaches make things interesting. I know vegan guys that are in ridiculous shape and I know vegan guys that look like they have a foot in the coffin. I can say the same about people I know who eat meat.
I’m not writing this blog post as a crusade against vegans, if it’s a crusade against anything it’s against misinformation like that of my aforementioned friend. I think there are a lot of benefits to vegan lifestyle done appropriately. For guidance on that check out my friend Jon Lewis’s website www.badassvegan.com.
Personally, simply the thought of a meal without meat makes me deeply depressed in the very depths of my soul. But does that mean I’m going to tell everyone I meet that if they don’t eat meat they’ll never get strong, or lean, or perform at optimum levels? No, I believe that people with different ideologies can entertain one another’s notions and learn from each other without necessarily having to agree.
